The agri-food sector

For some time now, both large supermarkets and the HORECA channel and in general the distributors of the food sector, have been much stricter with the quality standards required of producers and handlers.

This is because an important part of the final consumer prioritizes guarantees quality and origin of the products you buy, to other factors such as the final price.

As a consequence, many producers have the need, or the will, to give added value to your products by differentiating them from other equal ones produced in other geographical areas and with differential factors in the production processes that they affect a product with unique qualities.

What are the P.D.O. and the P.G.I.?

The most widely recognized international quality standards are the PROTECTED GEOGRAPHICAL DENOMINATIONS (P.D.O.) and PROTECTED GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATIONS (P.G.I.), and act as internationally recognized quality marks, granted by the Commission European, which relate a product to a specific geographic area.

The product that obtains the guarantee of Quality P.D.O. or P.G.I. must be framed in a totally defined and delimited territory and with production processes and specific environmental conditions that make it unique compared to other products the same from other geographic areas.

Steps to take to classify our product as P.D.O. or P.G.I.

The achievement of a P.D.O. or P.G.I., it's really complex. At least a laboratory accredited by ENAC and the inevitable participation of the corresponding Public Bodies, as well as the European Commission, must intervene. That taking into account that the rest of the steps:

  • creation of the regulatory council
  • elaboration of the statutes,
  • preparation of the reference standard(s) or regulations or specifications,
  • implementation in all production companies that are going to register with the regulatory council of the aforementioned specifications,
  • search and processing of the most advantageous grant (if there is one)
and the work associated with each and every one of these steps is carried out by the producers themselves while they carry out their day-to-day work, and once done, submit the corresponding request to DARP and make the appropriate modifications if so. They demand it of us. In the same way, and once the whole process is finished, it is highly advisable (if not necessary), a marketing and communication campaign to reposition the product on the market with the new quality status just granted.
